Operations & Development Geoscientist II

SUMMARY:

Mitsui E&P USA (MEPUSA) is looking for an experienced Geoscientist to work in a fast-paced, integrated, entrepreneurial exploration and development team focused on growing the company. MEPUSA has a small office, start-up culture where individuals get exposure to all facets of the business and is backed by the financial strength and balance sheet of a global, diverse trading house company with over 150 years of history. MEPUSA’s areas of responsibility include North and South America, onshore and offshore, conventional, and unconventional, energy and CCS.

The Operations & Development Geoscientist II will play a crucial role in supporting geological operations and development activities within the subsurface team. The position is ideal for an experienced, motivated, technically strong geoscientist familiar with wellsite operations and good economic and commercial acumen who wants to have influence on MEPUSA’s growth.

The position is in our Houston Galleria-area office and offers two-day remote work & three-day in-office work schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Well planning process including, but not limited to:
    • Knowledge and application of regulatory rules (offset distance, POP, FTP, NPZs, etc.)
    • Propose, revise, and approve pad and wellbore locations/plats
    • Create geological prognosis
    • Understand the process to develop and optimize directional well plans by working with Drilling engineer
    • Identify and plan for subsurface risk and/or hazards including faulting, existing wellbores, depleted/charge zones, etc.
    • Support log evaluation and reservoir characterization mapping, correlate formation tops, create geological maps, and 2D/3D seismic interpretation
    • Lead pre-spud meetings with both internal technical disciplines and outside 3rd parties
    • Ensure geosteering consultants have all necessary data to properly set up projects
  • Oversee 24/7 drilling operations including, but not limited to:
    • Able to geosteer horizontal wells using Starsteer software and review/confirm 3rd party interpretations
    • Provide 24/7 geological support during drilling operations and making assertive decisions when appropriate
    • Ensure drilling is proceeding as planned while making landing and drilling adjustments
    • Communicate effectively with mudloggers and review/confirm their interpretations and reports
    • Identify formation tops, casing points, and tool failures
    • Manage data collecting programs (wireline logging, cutting samples, gas isotubes, coring, etc.)
    • Make value driven decisions regarding premature failures/TD
    • Communicate with geosteers, mudloggers, rig, and drilling personnel
  • Ensure end-of-well reports appropriately captures parameters encountered during drilling (TOOH, Faults, failures, etc)
  • Maintain accurate final drilling records, documentation, and data archiving in respective folders
  • Discuss learnings and apply them to subsequent well performance and field development strategies
  • Work with regulatory to provide formation tops, as-drilled plats, as-completed plats, and logs
  • Identify and suggest process improvements
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to execute each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below should be representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • An advanced level of geotechnical expertise required, including experience in conventional and unconventional resources, petroleum systems analysis, uncertainty and risk, well log & seismic interpretation, and mapping capabilities.
  • Experience evaluating, integrating, and interpreting multiple types of data, including core, well logs, seismic, geochemical, formation pressure, historical production, and various engineering data.
  • Possess strong working knowledge of basic geoscience and workflows, an understanding of relational databases, and subsurface data and data management.
  • Prepare and deliver internal and external technical presentations to peers, management, and partners.
  • Possess strong communication and organizational skills and able to work well with peers, management, field personnel, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Must possess a high degree of initiative and independent judgement.
  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Capability to perform duties with a high level of accuracy.
  • Work independently and within integrated, multi-discipline teams.
  • Operate with integrity, teamwork, open communication, strong sense of ownership/accountability.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s in Geology required
  • 5-10 years of related experience in upstream operations specific to field development, well planning and 24/7 operations
  • Proficient with Petrel and StarSteer (or similar geoscience platforms) required

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Fluent verbal and written skills in English

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. Physical demands include:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and may need to routinely move around to communicate with different groups
  • Occasionally work late to meet with Tokyo office
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must have a valid DL.
